With this announcement Dr. Ling Guan
of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering becomes the
first Canada Research Chair holder at Ryerson. Dr. Guan works in the
area of search, management and transmission of digital media over
Internet/wireless networks. Dr. Guan's appointment to a Tier-I
seven-year renewable CRC position is an acknowledgment by his peers
that he is a world leader in this exciting research field. This CRC
appointment is also accompanied by a Canada Foundation for Innovation
(CFI) funding for the establishment of a new Laboratory for
Multimedia Processing and Communications (LMPC).
The key objective of the Canada Research Chairs Program is to enable
Canadian universities, together with their affiliated research
institutes and hospitals, to achieve the highest levels of research
excellence, to become world-class research centres in the global,
knowledge-based economy.
In its 2000 budget, the Government of Canada provided $900 million to
support the establishment of 2,000 Canada Research Chairs in
universities across the country by 2005. About 400 new Chairs will
be named in each of the next five years. Recruitment will be from
both inside and outside Canada.

On November 29, 2001, the Honourable Brian Tobin, Minister of
Industry, announced the next recipients of Canada Research Chairs, as
well as infrastructure funding from the Canada Foundation for
Innovation for these and earlier recipients of Canada Research
Chairs. 97 Chairs were announced at the event held at the McMaster
University Health Sciences Centre.
