Caledonian Centre for Engineering Education (CCEE) Establishes Closer Links with Global Partners

A recent visit to Glasgow Caledonian University by a distinguished Canadian Professor is an example of the increasing collaboration between our Caledonian Centre for Engineering Education (CCEE) and an International Network of Engineering Education Centres in Universities around the world. Professor Gosha Zywno, a faculty member in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Ryerson University in Toronto, is also a research associate of Ryerson Centre for Engineering Education (RCEE).

RCEE and CCEE are two of eight satellite centres of UNESCO International Centre for Engineering Education (UICEE), administered out of Monash University, Melbourne, Australia.

The UICEE satellite centres network spans such diverse countries as Scotland, Denmark, Sweden, Canada, India, Russia and Germany. The main objectives of UICEE are to facilitate the exchange of expertise and research on Engineering Education on a global scale, and in particular to assist developing countries with transfer of educational innovations and technological know-how, as it applies to Engineering Education. CCEE and RCEE share strong interests in applications of progressive pedagogies in Engineering Education, with CCEE (located within our Faculty of Science and Technology) established as an Internationally-respected leader in workplace learning, and RCEE offering expertise in integrating new technologies into the process of effective learning.

As part of the UICEE network collaboration, Professor Zywno has been completing her PhD research at GCU under advice and supervision of Professor Colin Chisholm, our Dean of Faculty of Science and Technology (pictured). During her six week stay at GCU, she had an opportunity to meet and share information with several members of the GCU community, including Mr. Les Watson, Director of Learning and Information Resources, Ms. Linda Creanor, Learning Technology Advisor, as well as with some of our Faculty’s Engineering staff. She also discussed her research with two experts in Engineering Education, Professor John Cowan from Heriot-Watt University, and Professor John Heywood from Trinity College in Dublin. Professor Zywno also presented a seminar at GCU entitled "Technology-Assisted Instruction in Control Education at Ryerson", on September 6, 2001.

GCU and Ryerson have many similarities in their background and in the constituencies they serve; both received the University Charter in the early nineties, and share a strong commitment to excellence in undergraduate education. Collaboration between staff from both Centres has so far resulted in several publications presented at International Engineering conferences. In April 2001, Dr. Bryan Temple, Co-ordinator of CCEE visited Ryerson, with reciprocal visits to follow. Future plans for expanding the collaboration between CCEE and RCEE include a possibility of staff and student exchange programmes
