I constantly look for self-motivated graduate students. I encourage the potential students who want to join my research group to contact with me. Here is a list of frequently asked questions with answers. Please read carefully before contacting me.
1. Q: What type of graduate students do you take?
A: To be my student, you must satisfy all the university requirements (like the minimum TOEFL requirement). If you have questions about those requirements and application procedures, please check graduate school webpage or contact the graduate admission office. In addition, you should
A: The best way to contact me is by email. Along with the email, you should send me your full CV, statement of interests, transcipts. Please also include your TOEFL, GRE score (if you have taken GRE). In addition, if you have publications, please email/mail them to me. It will increase your chance if you have domonstrated your research capability by publications. I can read both English and Chinese publications. Also, you may send me all other materials which you think relevant to domonstrate your reserach ability and academic excellence. If I find your background/record interesting, I will contact you for further details/interview.
Note that I generally ignore the emails without any detailed information about the applicant.
For postdoc applications, you should also send me a detailed list of publications, research/educational experience and sample publications, and suggest a few names of references who can comment on your research accomplishment and communication skills.
Please be advised that you should be honest in all your communications.
3. Q: Can I come to see you and introduce myself?
A: Please be aware that I am constantly working on a very busy schedule. I may or may not have time to talk to you if you come to my office without appointment. However, I do arrange interviews for good candidates before I make final decisions. For oversea students, a phone interview may be arranged.
4. Q: What type of questions do I expected if you contact me or interview me?
A: First, you should have good English communication skills. Some simple questions and concepts in mathematics (calculus, linear algebra, statistics, signal and systems, digital signal processing, etc.) and programming may be asked. For those applicants who have left school for many years should review these basic concepts before they come to see me.
5. Q: How to apply?
A: If you believe you are qualified, you can formally apply according to the procedures set by graduate school. Your application will be screened and ranked first by a departmental graduate admissions committee. All successfully screened applications will be made available to faculty members for possible admission. You should contact graduate school for all application related questions. If you wish to work with me, you should indicate my name in your application form.
6. Q: Will I receive financial support?
A: Currently
most of my students receive financial support through either NSERC
scholarship,
OGS scholarship, teaching assistantship, or other university/government
scholarships. Self-funding is welcome and may increase your chance of
being
accepted.
