Preamble

The development of robust condition (or state) monitoring of various parts of machines is import as it determines the quality of the end products. For example, in order to monitor the working state of the machine tool spindles, a wired three-axis accelerometer can be used. However, the wired configuration has practical problems and it is often not properly used. This project is to study the use of wireless alternative using a sensor based data acquisition and processing system that determines the working condition of the selected part(s) of the machines in real-time. The use of wireless sensing and monitoring system is expected to help improve the efficiency and reliability with less wastage of milled products and improved quality.

Objective

This project aims to develop and test a wireless sensor based real-time data acquisition and machine state analysis system.

Partial Specifications

A rotating machine is to be used with wireless sensors attached to the moving parts of a machine that is to be monitored and possibly controlled. Remote real-time monitoring is to be done with the processing of the sensed data in a computer. Based on the determined state of the parts, the control messages will be communicated to the machine wirelessly for control.

Suggested Approach

Students will select (i) the appropriate component of a large machine system that is to be monitored and controlled real-time (ii) the physical conditions (such as rotor speed, temperature, torque, angle of the blade for example) that are to be monitored using a prototype, (iii) develop an appropriate model for the monitoring and control, (iv) the types of sensors, the wireless communication technology, the data acquisition system and processing methodologies. Following the successful monitoring and data acquisition, the control part of the project will be done. Test the entire system for operating conditions.

Group Responsibilities

It will be done by a group of three students. It is expected that all three are involved in all aspects of the project though one may work exclusively on any project aspect. All have to work on the design decisions to be aware of and be responsible of the consequences of the choices. Study wireless sensor systems, remote communication and control, machining systems. Design/develop the technical specifications required for the system prototype. Implement and test of the entire system with the above objectives. Follow the project management plan carefully and thoroughly. Responsible for the demo and project report.

Student A Responsibilities
