Preamble

The output of a nuclear generator is automatically regulated by a controller to the setpoint set by an authorized nuclear operator during the normal power system condition. The setpoint varies with the on-going demand of reactive power in the connected power system. The control for regulating the generator voltage is known as Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR). The power system is often subjected to various disturbances caused by for example fault activating, large load changing, substation switching, etc. These disturbances if not properly handled can cause stability problems on the power system. With appropriate operations on the generator and its connected transmission system components, the disturbed power system may either regain the pre-disturbance operating state or reach a new stable operating state after the disturbances. The generator control for stabilizing the power system disturbances is known as Power System Stabilizer (PSS).

Objective

The objective of this project is to design an advanced nuclear electricity generator control system equipped with both AVR and PSS functions.

Partial Specifications

Design an AVR for the control of nuclear generator voltage and reactive power.
Design a PSS for the nuclear generator to suppress disturbances in the connected power system.

Suggested Approach

Study the text book by P. Kundur, Power System Stability and Control, McGraw-Hill, 1994.
Study literature on power system stability control.

Group Responsibilities

Design a nuclear generator control system with both AVR and PSS functions. Perform design simulations. Perform design analysis and design optimization.

Student A Responsibilities

Research the requirements for generator control for the nuclear operation. Design the generator PSS control with a focus for minimizing any impact on the nuclear turbine-generator system. Develop computer models for this part of the complete project design.

Student B Responsibilities

Research the requirements for nuclear generator AVR control. Design the nuclear generator AVR control. Develop computer models for this part of the complete project design.

Student C Responsibilities
