Preamble

A Solar panel will charge a 12V battery. The DC from the battery will be converted to high frequency AC,using a 555 Timer. This AC will be fed to a coil on a magnetic core. The alternating flux created by the coil will give rise to Eddy current and Husteresis losses in the magnetic core. These losses will manifest as heat in the magnetic core. A cooking pot on the magnetic core will do the cooking from the generated heat.

Objective

Build the voltage regular for the 12V charger from Solar panel. Build the Inverter circuit, using a 555 Timer and Mosfets to feed ac to the coil on a magnetic core.

Partial Specifications

The project should generate enough heat to boil one litre of water to boiling in 10 minutes

Suggested Approach

Review lelecrtical machine books to understand the factors which control Eddy current and Hysteresis losses.
Review magnetic circuit, understand how current and coil turns determine the flux generated.
Understand how 555 Timer works; understand working principle of MOSFET.

Group Responsibilities

The group is responsible to design and simulate the project in MULTISIM,buy the components, build the circuit and display the results.

Student A Responsibilities

Responsible to design, simulate and build the 12V battery regulation circuit from the solar panel, which gives variable dc voltage, depending on solar intensity.

Student B Responsibilities

Responsible to design, simulate and build the inverter using 555 Timer and MOSFETS. The AC from the inverter will feed the magnetic coil

Student C Responsibilities

Responsible to design, simulate and build the magnetic circuit on a wrought Iron magnetic core. The size (gauge) of the wire and the number of turns of the flux producing magnetic circuit should be determined. The flux and the frequency of the alternating flux must be enough to heat a litre of water to boiling in 10 minutes.
