Preamble

Solar panel will charge a 12V battery. The 12V dc from the battery will be converted to high frequency ac. This ac will be fed to a coil on a magnetic core. The rsulting alternating flux will create Eddy current and Hysteresis losses which will heat the nagnetic core. Cooking pot placed on the magnetic core will do the cooking.

Objective

Build the battery charger from the solar panel; use the Arduino to program the gate signals of MOSFETS to generate high frequency ac which will be fed to the magnetic coil. Number of turns of the magnetic coil to be calculated and shape of the magnetic core has to be designed.

Partial Specifications

The heating by Eddy current and Hysteresis losses is dependent on frequency of ac and the magnitude of the flux. The heat generated should be such as to bring one litre of water to boiling from ambient temperature in ten minutes

Suggested Approach

Review operating principles of BJT, Diodes and MOSFETS. Know the Voltage regulation circuits, inverter circuits using MOSFETS.

Learn programming of microcontroller, Arduino. Learn its input and output ports

Group Responsibilities

Intergrate solar panel, voltage regulation circuit,Inverter circuit and the magnetic circuit, and show a functioning prototype of the project.

Student A Responsibilities

Design, build and test the 12V voltage regulation circuit from the solar panel. Display current battery voltage, charging current.Include protection from over-charging the battery.

Student B Responsibilities

Design, build and test MOSFET driven inverter circuit from 12Vdc battery. Program Arduino to generate proper gate signals for the MOSFETS to generate the desired ac frequency of the inverter. Display the frequency of the inverter circuit.

Student C Responsibilities

Design, build and test the magnetic circuit and the magnetic core. How many turns and current the coils should have to generate the heat from Eddy current and Hysteresis losses to bring one liter of water to boiling teperature in ten minutes. Display the temperatue of the magnetic core.
