Preamble

Autonomous vehicles are closer to the reality than ever before. Machine vision, sensing and real time control are the key behind autonomous vehicles. Designing autonomous passenger vehicles that travel in busy streets are very challenging. However, designing a semi autonomous Robot that follows an elderly/sick person indoors is not that difficult.

Objective

In this project students will design a Semi Autonomous Robot Assistant (SARA) that will follow an elderly/sick person wherever he/she goes and perform basic helping.

Partial Specifications

1. SARA will call someone if the Master is in trouble or fallen.
2. SARA will provide basic information such as weather and news.
3. SARA will remind certain pre-recorded events, such as taking the medication on time.
4. SARA will answer basic questions.

Suggested Approach

SARA shall have a robot (moving) portion. Communication software, video camera and image processing software to follow, identify the status of the master and to communicate when necessary.
