Topic Category

Signal Processing / Communication

Preamble

Li-ion battery is popular in the industry applications where power supplies are required. To form the battery pack, the batteries will be tested again the same capacity, internal resistance and life. A multi-cell testing system will be able to test multiple batteries at the same time to improve the efficiency in the industry

Objective

The objective is to design a testing system for multiple batteries

Partial Specifications

The speficications:
1) Input supply: 12VDC (powered by wall adapters)
2) Number of cells testing at the same time: 6
3) Each testing port: 0-5VDC, 0-3A

Suggested Approach

The team should investigate the battery testing algorithm including capacity test and internal resistance measurement.
1) Design the testing algorithm with 6 batteries,
2) Design the DC-DC (non-isolated) converters to performance the charging/discharging of the batteries,
3) Design a high accuracy measurement system to measure the capacity of the battery, it is suggested to use the commercial IC.
4) Design a micro-controller to perform the automatic testing and data collection.

Group Responsibilities

The group should response for the design, test and validate the project

Student A Responsibilities

Student A will investigate the testing algorithm and program the micro-controller for automatic testing.

Student B Responsibilities

Student B will design the non-isolated DC-DC converter for testing

Student C Responsibilities

Student C will design the measuring system to capture the charging/discharging current, battery voltage and cell temperature.

Student D Responsibilities

Student D will build the necessary hardware to integrate the system together as one device.
