Preamble

The number of fatalities due to Forgotten Baby Syndrome (FBS) skyrockets. Total average number of deaths of children left in cars is over 30 per year in US. The idea of this research is to design a notification to parents by using smartphones that are very popular devices. The design consists of two main parts: a hardware and a software. Hardware part consists of at least three microphones (array of microphones) embedded in different positions in the car. These microphones collect statistical information (i.e. environment sounds) and transfer them to a centralized data acquisition unit. In this phase, a microcontroller processes the data, cancels the noise and by applying classification techniques detects the child’s sound.

Objective

- To design, develop and implement a data acquisition unit, connected to a PC through a USB port. - To design a data acquisition unit by applying a classification technique which classifies different sounds in the car environment and detects the child’s sound and alerts to the related smartphone. - To design a signal processing software with capability to cancel the noise by applying classification techniques.

Partial Specifications

• Design and develop a data acquisition unit;

• Design and develop the hardware system and required interfaces;

• Design the noise cancelation algorithm;

• Specify the used classification algorithm;

• Design and implement a Graphical User Interface;

• Specify the characteristics of the used microcontroller;

Suggested Approach

- Use off the shelve products such as PC, laptop, data acquisition board;
- Use classification techniques;
- Run simulations to ensure the system works;

Group Responsibilities

- Literature review on classification techniques and machine learning, data accusation components and signal processing;
- Design/develop the technical specifications required for the system prototype under consideration,
- Implement and test of the entire system with the above objectives,
- Prepare a technical report and present the results at the end of the program.

Student A Responsibilities

To design, develop and implement the hardware prototype (CPU, power supply, Interfaces, and data acquisition board).

Student B Responsibilities
