Preamble

Smart Cities and Buildings need to also inherently be Safe Cities and Buildings. Most of our upcoming cities have high rises and dense concentration of buildings, making it even more essential to rapidly and effectively address any type of fire situation to minimize and contain any loss of life and property. The speed of local response and the degree of preparedness is especially important when you consider the fact that most cities have dense traffic conditions and it is unlikely that in every situation the Fire Department and its equipment reach the required locations immediately or in a timely manner. Some of the recent fire mishaps in Canada have further underlined the fact that this is not an area to be taken lightly as the consequences can be devastating. Fortunately there are emerging technologies IoT technologies which can be leveraged to enhance the effectiveness and speed of the fire response. It is critical that the deployment of these should be systematized and standardized, and should go hand in hand with the evolution of our cities into smart cities that are made up of high-rises and urban sprawls. In this project a fire tracking and hazard response processing system will be designed, developed, implemented and tested. The system will collect data from its fire IoT sensors, and cameras. The main challenge will be keeping the IoT sensors functioning in the absence of wifi connectivity in certain sections of high-rises during a fire mishap. A specialized spread spectrum modulation technique derived from chirp spread spectrum (CSS) called LORA will be leveraged to mitigate drawbacks of conventional communication mediums. The sensors will form a LORAWAN mesh network and appropriate LORA gateways will be placed strategically across the highrise building and a rapid response system will be developed. The system also allows to view the reports and videos generated by the system on a mobile phone using an interface.

Objective

The overall goal is to design, develop, implement and test a rapid response system for fire hazard mitigation. It should be done using cutting edge technologies like LORA to reduce high failure rate of existing conventional IoT systems.

Partial Specifications

* Constant Monitoring of fire hazard infrastructure using LORA protocol.
*Provide safe path ways for fire response team in the event of disaster.
* Leverage LORAWAN network to create local networks across building floors to provide a robust fire mitigation infrastructure.
* Utilize cloud platforms to utilize publish/subscribe critical events of fire sensor monitors for processing and arriving safety improvements using machine learning algorithms.

Suggested Approach

Research on different modules required for the project (software or hardware, networking, sensing, processing). Create milestone steps and try to achieve them regularly with backup plans in case of failure. Put together the information available and start designing the device/application. Validate device/application by rigorous testing and ensure that the final product is completely functional. Demonstrate by creating videos if necessary of various scenarios that depicts the use of this device in various situations.
