Power

Preamble

In remote area, the use of PV is a great potential to power the electrical devices. The need for the inverters to interface with PV, energy storage and appliances are growing in the other countries, where the grid is not wide enough to cover the remote area.

Objective

The objective is to design a multi-port inverter, which can integrate the PV, energy storage and appliances.

Partial Specifications

The inverter should have at least three ports:
1) A 400W DC port for PV output with MPPT control
2) A 1000W bidirectional DC port for battery storage (1kWh) at 48V.
3) A 120V, 60Hz, 1800W(peak) AC port for appliances with pure sine output.
A control system will enable the battery charging when the PV has output and supply the appliances through the battery.

Suggested Approach

The team should investigate the literature of the multi-port inverter and study the control system for the inverter. The suggested approach is as following:
1) Design the power topology of multi-port inverter.
2) Design a control system to enable the function of each port
3) Create a simulation model to validate the design
4) Build a prototype to test the functions.

Group Responsibilities

The group responses for designing the inverter, test and validate the functions of the inverter.

Student A Responsibilities

Student A design the inverter circuit with proper controller

Student B Responsibilities

Student B design the DC port with PV and MPPT control

Student C Responsibilities

Student C design the bidirectional DC/DC port to interface the 48V battery pack. The control of battery charging and discharging is included

Student D Responsibilities

Student D design the whole control coordination of the system to maintain the power balance.
