MRI phantom construction, integration, and testing
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive diagnostic tool that provides high soft-tissue contrast, 3-dimensional images, thereby facilitating disease diagnosis and early intervention. Development of new MRI sequences requires extensive testing which is most efficiently and ethically conducted on phantoms; ie devices that accurately simulate the physiology (structure, function, and motion) of the imaged tissue or organ. The student will join the phantom development team at the Maternal-Fetal Imaging (MFI) lab and facilitate the integration of components and their testing.
The student will become familiar with all phantom components, 3D drawings, and physical properties, and will be responsible for integrating them in a way that permits replacing elements easily. The student will conduct literature reviews, source materials, communicate with sales representatives, and help with finalizing and testing phantom components.
1) Knowledge of 3D mechanical design, 3D printing, and hands-on experience with machining. 2) Understanding of material chemical properties. 3) Basic knowledge of MRI physics, signal and image processing. 4) Strong background in physics.
