December 6th Memorial

The Canadian Government has proclaimed December 6th a "National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women", and commemorative events occur annually across Canada to remember the women killed in 1989 and to continue action to end violence in all of its forms.

This year, Ryerson's "December 6th Memorial event" will be held on Thursday, December 4th, at 12:00noon in the east section of the Quad by the December 6th Memorial Sculpture. The purpose of this event is to remember the 14 women engineering students at Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal, who were murdered because they were women. At Ryerson, "December 6th" is a day for Ryerson students, faculty and staff to join together to remember and honour all the women who live with and have died by violence.

Speakers at this year's Memorial event will include the Executive Director of 519 Church Street Community Centre, Ryerson's President, Ryerson's VP Administration & Student Affairs, as well as representatives from Ryerson's Women's Centre and RyeSAC.

After the ceremony refreshments will be served in Room KHE-124, and purple ribbons to commemorate the event will be on sale prior to the event, in Room KHE-124.

If you are interested in joining Ryerson's December 6th Committee, or assisting with December 6th activities, please contact either the Office of Discrimination and Harassment Prevention Services (x7494) or the Women in Engineering Office (x7220).
