The Writing Centre

Book a 50 minute session at the Centre with a writing tutor at any stage of writing your essay. The tutor will help you to structure the ideas you have and suggest strategies to increase your control over your writing. You can bring an essay that has been marked (and will not be resubmitted) and ask us to go over it with you, suggesting strategies for improvement.

• Handouts APA and MLA formats
• Suggestions on essay writing
• Preventing wordiness
• Parallel structure
• Common grammar problems
• Punctuation
• Formats for Annotated bibliography
• Review of professional literature
• University book review, etc.
• Sessions on various writing strategies. Watch for our advertisements. (You can also ask the Centre to provide a tutor for a particular aspect of writing, if you collect a group for it.)

We do teach you strategies that you will be able to use on other assignments. We advise on job application letters and resumes.

We don't proof-read. That's your job - though we can suggest efficient ways to do it. We don't offer last minute quick fixes either, so leave at least a day for revision before your essay is due.

We cannot give tutorial help with fiction, poetry, we can put you in touch with other creative writers around Ryerson, and with the editors of Ryerson publications who might offer you advice and encouragement.

Note: Because our services are heavily used, you may BOOK only one appointment a week. However, you can drop in any time without an appointment, and any tutor who is free will work with you. We expect you to keep any appointments you make, or phone to let us know you can’t. If you just fail to show up, we shall not let you book again, though you may still drop in.
