Software

The extern software described here has proved useful to me and my students. All of the software is freely-available and most of the products are portable—i.e. they work under most major operating systems such as Microsoft Windows, MacOS and various flavours of Unix.

cygwin:

Since the software packages recommended here are supposed to be “operating system independent”, why this section of Windows-only software?

Simple! The cygwin package provides a Unix-like environment to be run under Microsoft Windows.
